4 tips to plan your trip to Ile de Ré

A trip to Ile de Ré, little jewel of France, is always a pleasure and is thoroughly enjoyed by travellers from all over the world who wish to adopt the French lifestyle for a week or two and there is no better place than the center of french authenticity itself. To ensure your trip is as smooth as possible, Villanovo has put together a little guide with 4 tips to plan the perfect holiday to Ile de Ré.

>>> Why is ile de Ré perfect for a family holiday ?

1) Choose the right village

1) Choose the right village

The first step of planning the perfect holiday to Ile de Ré is to choose one of the 10 villages of this beautiful island. Despite its modest surface of 85 km2, each area of the island has its very own atmosphere and way of life. It is important to note that all 10 of them are delightful and have the ingredients for a fantastic holiday. However, with slightly differing characteristics, it is evident that some might suit some travellers more than others. The beaches are breathtaking across the entire island but it is true that there is a larger choice of beautiful beaches in Les-Portes-en-Ré, St Clément, La Couarde and Bois-Plage. For those who enjoy a night out with friends, we recommend La Couarde and St Martin which is where the renowned Le Bastion Club is located, a favourite of teenagers. For a family holiday, Villanovo recommends the chic village of Ars-en-Ré, Les Portes-en-Ré, La Couarde or Bois-Plage due to the abundance of activity which they provide.

2) Pick the right time

2) Pick the right time

Similarly to other destinations, choosing the right to head to Ile de Ré is crucial. Located in the West of France, Ile de Ré does not have the climate of the Algarve or Greece. The summer months June, July, August and September are the busiest months of the year in Ile de Ré but also the most pleasant. In July and August, travellers can be assured that they will come across half of Paris but the atmosphere remains chic and tranquil. In those 2 months, temperatures can vary from 18 to 25 degrees, with an average sea temperature of 20 degrees. June and September are sometimes said to be the optimal months to visit the island as it is a little bit quieter and the weather is still pleasant.

3) Plan an itinerary

3) Plan an itinerary

Though the atmosphere on Ile de Ré is rather relaxed and laid-back, it can be beneficial to have an itinerary especially if it is your first visit on the island. In the summer, it is highly likely that travelers will spend most days on one of Ile de Ré’s beautiful beaches, sunbathing and dozing off with the sound of waves. However, the island has more to offer than ideal bathing spots. The markets are an unavoidable attraction. Usually held in the morning, these are ideal to mingle with the locals and buy regional products such as salted butter caramel, salt or oysters.
